  • Exercise for the First day - Retelling Matthew 27:32-61

It was Friday, about noon. I was heading home, thinking about the questions my oldest son would ask me at that night’s Passover meal. “Why is this night different from every other night?” he would ask. I was about to recite the answer to myself when I realized that there was a crowd of people lining the road in front of me. Suddenly, two Roman soldiers dragged me into the middle of the scene. There was a man on his hands and knees; so bruised and bloody that he looked like something hanging in a butcher’s shop. I’ve seen prisoners being taken for execution before but this guy was in a class by himself. The soldiers made me pick up the cross for his crucifixion and carry it up the hill. I never really thought about how heavy that cross might be. It was a terrible load! When we reached the top of the hill outside the city, I dropped the cross on the ground and stood, rolling my shoulders and stretching my neck muscles. A soldier told me I could leave if I wanted. I’ve seen a few of these executions before and I wasn’t in a mood to see another Jew murdered by the Romans. I looked at the horizon and saw some of the darkest clouds ever gathering in the distance. I figured if I stayed, it would rain and I’d get soaked and I’d be late for Seder, so I headed back toward home. I started thinking about the Passover questions again. “Why is this night different from every other night?”
